Toronto’s own design duo, Dean and Dan Caten of Dsquared2 have stirred some controversy with their Fall/Winter 2012 showing in Milan. The prom-inspired collection was full of their signature mix of denim and lux with cheerfully bright colour combinations. The problem? Some of the models walking the show were sent out with lit cigarettes in bedazzled filters. Many people are suggesting that this sends out the wrong message, especially when there is a worldwide push to end smoking.
The Caten brothers have yet to make a statement to defend their actions. Whether they set out to create publicity around their collection or whether they were just showing everyday European life, is unknown. Most likely, it’s a mix of both. Many fashion insiders have said that using cigarettes in their show was unnecessary and detracted from the beautiful clothes, not to mention it glamorizes a very unhealthy habit.
Maybe next season Dsquared2 will learn from their “mistake” and send models down the runway holding a glass of milk and an apple.

For a kid it’s Christmas and for a sports fan it’s the SuperBowl but for me, it’s the Oscar’s Red Carpet. Past years have left me disappointed with the same dresses over and over again, however 2012 has re-emerged with new fashions, styles and colours.
BEST LOOK OF THE NIGHT and BEST LBD: Rose Byrne. This asymmetrical black sequined Vivienne Westwood is to DIE FOR. It’s cinched which you don’t always see with sequined dresses. Byrne is wearing Chanel jewels – seriously can you go wrong with Chanel anything?! I love her severe bob and her Jimmy Choo black platform heels are perfect.
2nd Best of the Night: Michelle Williams. This burnt orange dress looks red on television but it is divine. I love the tiers, the textured fabric and the brooch on the side. I’m not sure I love the crocodile pink clutch, however. But this is gorgeous. My five year old niece Sofia likes this dress too…it is Louis Vuitton after all.
3rd Best Look of the Night: Natalie Portman. This red textured polka dotted chiffon dress is Christian Dior vintage from 1954. I adore this dress and even though I don’t like the jewels that were pulled for this dress (they seem too fancy – black onyx or black diamond earrings would go better with this ensemble) however I still love this dress and the flow.
Best Bright Color of the Night: Viola Davis. This green Vera Wang fits like a glove and the colour on your skin is amazing. This is another look my niece Sofia likes – it’s really pretty. Love that Viola’s hair is natural and her jewels are exquisite.
Ode to the Earth: Missi Pyle. This Valentina Delfino eco-friendly dress is the FIRST of its kind and the environmentalist in me HAS to call it out for being so cool. I don’t love the dress, itself, but the idea that the silk was made with cruelty free worms. That is so awesome and it deserves a very special shout out. Here’s to saving the earth!:
Best White Dress #1: Milla Jovovich. O.M.G. it’s Elie Saab! This look is so perfect. I love the style, the sequins, the fit and the red lips are seductive yet classy. This is the BEST white gown of the night.
White Dress #2: Jennifer Lopez. Wow, this white Zuhair Murad dress makes her look so hot. I am not a fan of the see-through shoulders (or nipples!) If this didn’t have any cut outs it would be a best dressed nominee for me. But talk about figure flattering!
White Dress #3: Octavia Spencer. This Tadashi Shoji dress suits her body, makes her look amazing and is so appropriate for an Oscar winner! And it hides her arms which seem to be a theme in each dress she has worn this awards season:
History repeating itself?: Emma Stone. I have seen this Giambattista Valli Haute couture style dress before! Nicole Kidman wore a similar Balenciaga dress on the 2007 Oscars red carpet. It was gorgeous then and it is gorgeous now. Maybe Emma is too young to know that Nicole already rocked this on the red carpet:
Most Improved: Tina Fey. I adore this woman and really look up to her for being the funniest and smartest in Hollywood. She’s wearing a custom Carolina Herrera dress. I love navy and black together and look for this “peplum” trend for the Spring. It’s so figure flattering! We love you Tina, your book Bossy Pants is seriously hilarious:
Best GOLD dress: Stacey Kiebler. I don’t think the colour works on Kiebler per se but I do like this gold Marchesa dress. I love her date George Clooney more. He is perfection.
Fan Favorite: Jessica Chastain. This Alexander McQueen dress is regal and very appropriate for the Oscars. The detail and fit are exquisite. One of my favourite combos is black and gold.
Worst of the Night:
Shailene Woodley in Valentino Couture
Sandra Bullock – this is disappointing since it’s Marchesa:

We have no idea who’s going home with gold this Sunday at the Academy Awards (we can make some educated guesses though) but I suspect that most of you out there are excited about the designers labels. That is, waiting for the moment when stars like Angelina Jolie and Michelle Williams answer the all important, “who are you wearing?” question.
Having said that, there are obvious Hollywood go-to designers. Giorgio Armani, Chanel, Versace, Elie Saab, Dior, Marchesa and Valentino are the most uttered names on the red carpet. There are always some wild cards like Tilda Swinton who often wears designs by her pal, Haider Ackermann.
Here are some of my fav gowns that would be nice to see on our beloved celebs and Oscar nominees.

Scarves are the simplest and chicest way to update your wardrobe or give an outfit a little pop. They’re also a great way to baby-step yourself into the new season. If wearing your favourite lime green blouse now seems too early, try coiling a green scarf around your neck. Patterned scarves work the same way for people who tend to shy away from prints. Having that little bit of interest around your face can really change an outfit’s dynamic.
The Peacock Parade is offering a silk scarf sale by La Fiorentina and a sale by Carolina Amato featuring cashmere scarves. The colours are dynamite and they’re all long enough to let them flow, tie in a knot or use as a shawl. Pick up this perfect accessory at incredible prices and get creative.
