London Eye

I’ve been fine tuning the details of my upcoming trip to London, England. I’ve been checking out the best restaurants, views and of course, the best shopping. I got inspired by British style and the amazing designers hailing from Britain. Of course the usual suspects being, Burberry, Vivienne Westwood and Alexander McQueen are fabulous but it was the slightly lesser known designers making the biggest splash for me this summer.

Here’s a selection of some gorgeous looks from my favourite British designers.

Gareth Pugh SS2011

Gareth Pugh has a unique and sometimes gothic aesthetic that is reminiscent of Yohji Yamamoto. His creativity and fashion forward approach to design help to keep this young Brit relevant.

House of Holland SS2011

House of Holland designer, Henry Holland is known for his wild, colourful and fun designs. It’s no wonder celebs like M.I.A. and Agyness Deyn run to him for uber cool clothes.

Julien Macdonald SS2011

Julien Macdonald makes beautiful clothes. He uses fabric with great movement and perfect tailoring. Macdonald’s designs also have a modest sexiness that makes them so perfect for any woman.

Jonathan Saunders SS2011

Scotland native, Jonathan Saunders had been showing his collections in London for several years before deciding to take them to New York. His wearable pieces keep international fashionistas flocking to Harvey Nichols and Harrods for his pieces.

Preen SS2011

Thea Begrazzi and Justin Thornton, the duo behind Brit label, Preen are known for their fluid collections and body hugging pieces. They also added Preen Line – a diffusion line targeted a younger, fashionable crowd.

Red lipstick is crucial to have in your beauty arsenal. If it’s good enough for Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor, it’s good enough for you. Red lips are a staple in the fashion industry and should be a staple in your makeup bag. You can rock a lightly pigmented hue during the day and a more scarlet, deep-ruby shades for evening.

There are three different types of red: true-reds, orange-reds, and blue-reds. You don’t need to worry about the colour of your hair or your eyes – just the undertone of your skin. Determine whether the undertone of your skin is neutral, yellow, or pink. If you have neutral undertones, go for true reds. For those with yellow and olive undertones, you should try orange-brown reds. And if you have pink undertones, try blue-reds.

Here are some great picks based on skin colour undertones:

Yellow Undertones - NARS Heat Wave

Pink Undertones - YSL Pure Lipstick Star Red

Neutral Undertones - YSL Rouge Pur #13

Red lips are a perennial beauty favourite and can be sexy and empowering so wear your signature red lip fearlessly! Because you’ve got it,  and you should most certainly flaunt it!

For 5 years, the Luminato festival has dazzled crowds with its celebration of art in all its forms. From theatre, to art, music, dance and more, Luminato showcases this talent for 10 days. Canada’s wildly talented designer, Denis Gagnon has created an art/fashion installation in conjunction with the National Ballet of Canada’s premiere of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.

Gagnon was commissioned by Luminato and Lancome to create a one-of-a-kind gown that could possibly be worn by Alice herself, albeit a more adult Alice. What he designed, called, Garden of Roses: Denis Gagnon Interprets Alice, was an intricate dress that is simply breathtaking to behold.

Much of the fabric used for the dress was imported from Paris and constructed here. With only one more day to view it for free at Wintergarden Lobby at MetroCENTRE, there’s no time to lose. This is Canadian craftsmanship at its finest.

An outfit is never complete without accessories, especially beautiful YSL accessories.  Accessories can be used to transform a simple LBD into something spectacular. The greatest part is that accessories never go out of style, so feel free to splurge and invest in some great pieces. For some inspiration, here are a few YSL pieces that have caught my eye…

A great way to spruce up your outfit is to add a fantastic handbag or clutch. Pick a bag that is an eye-catching colour, like red! The best part is, you will not have to look very far for Yves Saint Laurent handbags. They will be available on The Peacock Parade soon – keep an eye out!
