As we inch closer and closer to summer and we start to peel away our layers, we can soon see that our clothes have pizzazz while our handbags are…plain. The simple handbag isn’t cutting it anymore this season. Our wardrobes are filled with bright colours and stripes aplenty and yet our bags tend to be black. Take a risk and get some handbag confidence! Next time you go purse shopping, check out some fun, multi-coloured and patterned handbags. Here are some of our favourite looks from the Spring/Summer 2011 collections.
This chic little clutch from Miu Miu is perfect for a hot date or drinks with the girls.
Fendi’s multi-toned handbag is elegant and perfect for any daytime affair. There are several colours but they’re soft and easy to match with any outfit.
Salvatore Ferragamo has the perfect business purse for everyday use. It’s gorgeous, practical and is in a great colour that’s easy to mix with pieces, without being bland.
The perfect white bag! We whine because they can get dirty, but there is nothing more fresh and summery than having a white bag on your arm. The texture and gold hardware add some fashionable street cred.
If you’re worried about wearing stripes on your body, wear them on your handbag. This bag has a beach feel to it while still being elegant enough to wear to a brunch.
Valentino has created a great black bag with inventive designs that are not only attractive but give you extra safety as well! There’s nothing wrong with a fantastic black bag, as long as it has a little oomph.

Hats were all over the runways this season. Not only did we get a feast of hats on the day of the Royal Wedding, but we’re seeing more and more commoners opt for hats. We needed to get the scoop so, The Peacock Parade asked acclaimed Toronto-based millinery, Karyn Gingras of Lilliput Hats some basic hat questions. Gingras’ designs are fabulous and inventive, and add a whole new dimension of glamour to any outfit. Lilliput Hats are available across Canada, or you can visit her on-site at her atelier on College Street in Toronto.
1. What are some spring/summer hat trends?
The fascinator and for sure some of the creative sculptural hats we saw at the Royal Wedding. Also, we do a classic fedora in many juicy panama straw colours as well as vintage inspired wide brim and cloche hats.
2. What inspired your spring collection?
Moving out of a long and dreary winter, and updating the colours around which were grey and muted, with a bit of metallic and soft pastel new bud colour palettes.
3. What are some tips you can give women to help them find the perfect hat?
Try lots on, have fun and step out of your comfort zone. Don’t see yourself bigger than you are – most women feel they are larger than they actually are. Try wide and small brim shapes, and if you wear glasses or are petite, try styles which roll off the face a bit. The hat should frame the face and complement the outfit.
4. We saw a lot of hats on the Spring 2011 runways, do you find that women are wearing hats more than they used to?
Clothing has become mass marketed and almost has a “uniform” quality. A hat is a great way to update an older suit or dress and add a bit of personal flair.
5. Did you have any favourite hats from the royal wedding?
I loved Miriam González Durántez ‘s hat. She is the wife of deputy Prime Minister, Nick Clegg. Amazing! And while I thought the princesses Eugienie and Beatrice’s choices were odd, at least it got people talking about hats!

Anyone currently reading this blog from Toronto knows that it has been raining here a lot lately. And by a lot, I mean, everyday. The days are dreary, you barely want to get out of bed, let alone, figure out what you’re going to wear. Forget about donning suede, silk or light coloured leather, as they are rain’s sworn enemies. So what’s a fashionable woman to do? Tie her hair in a bun, wear a rain poncho and wait for sun? No way! Check out The Peacock Parade’s picks for fashionable water-proof items to wear on those rainy days. Compliments guaranteed.
When choosing clothing, black is slimming and timeless, a definite go-to but when choosing an umbrella, black is just plain boring. Show your fun, carefree side in the rain. Having an amusing umbrella will make you happy, even if the weather does not!
Keeping your feet nice and dry never looked so good. These cute rain boots from See by Chloé come in many different colour combinations and are a great option for commuters.
Not much of a rain boot person? No problem. Hunter has created a new water-proof ballerina flat. With all the comfort and quality you can except from Hunter, these flats are just adorable. They are offered in basic black and two-tones like the black and pink shown below.
The British know that having a raincoat is essential when it rains all the time. That’s why British fashion house, Burberry always has the very best in water-proof jackets and trenches. The red tinted raincoat is colourful and also has a sophisticated feel to it.
Someone who is less daring might opt for this raincoat, also by Burberry.
Whatever your pick, a splash of colour on those rainy days is sure to uplift the dampest of spirits.
